348: Zuby on Building a Business as an Individual Creator

I don't ask for permission to do things that I want to do. A lot of people seem to be sitting around waiting for some kind of approval, or permission, or recognition—something like that. And I'm always trying to tell people, you don't need that. You don't need permission to start a podcast. You don't need permission to start a YouTube channel, to release an album, to make a book, whatever—just create it.

Anything new that you do, you are going to suck at. That's just the reality. To get good at something, you have to go through the stage of not being good at it but staying at it, and then over time, you develop your confidence and ability ... On a long enough time scale, you actually become an expert at the thing you initially sucked at.

60,000 people a year in America die of the flu ... That's half of the coronavirus ... That [the flu] also kills children by the way. Coronavirus doesn't really affect kids; the flu does kill children. During flu season, you don't even know it's flu season. No one's wearing a mask. No one's social distancing.

I released my first album 14 years ago ... So many people who now know me just discovered me in the past 18 months, and a lot of them sort of think my whole career started with a viral tweet. No.... I've been on Twitter since 2009. I've been on Facebook since 2004. I've been using these things for a long time ... I've put out eight albums and EPs; I've been to every city in the UK; I've done loads of tours and stuff. I've just been grinding and hustling, and I was doing it all before it was cool.

I never used to think that my views and opinions, or my thoughts, were particularly interesting. Even now, a lot of the stuff I say, I think it's relatively common sensical and somewhat mundane. I feel like I shouldn't really have to say it, but the weirder the world goes, and the more that other people are lying and deceiving people, the more refreshing people find it to just have individuals out there who are willing to have conversations and share their honest thoughts.
